The Friday Night Project – with guest host David
Tennant
Written by Deryn Corner
Really we should call this the Thursday night project because that
is what it was… I hate to shatter any illusions you might have that
it is a live show because ... it isn’t!!
It is now… well late enough for me to really be in bed (especially
as I have a VERY early train to catch in the morning!) but I also
know that if I don’t at least start this now by the time tomorrow
comes I will have forgotten everything (I’m sure that already I’ve
forgotten a LOAD of stuff that went on!!!)
So to back track…
Due to running this wonderful website (I’ll get the creeping in
early and then it is out of the way!) Lauren had been approached
by the team behind the FNP (I’ll call it that ‘cos it saves on typing)
and through no doubt devious and dastardly means ended up getting
herself and a plus one (which make me sound a little like one of
The Doctor’s assistants) added to the guest list for the show. Now
don’t get me wrong we had applied for tickets and would have taken
our chances with all the others but being on the guest list just
gave us the safety of knowing that we were GUARANTEED a seat and
better than that we didn’t have to queue (and that would prove to
be a bigger blessing than we could have ever imagined when my train
was cancelled and I eventually got there with about 10 minutes to
spare!!!!!)
The queues were well established by the time I got there and featured
several ‘well known’ (shall we say) names and faces from the world
of Doctor Who and David Tennant fandom. It was nice to be able to
stroll past them and head to the ‘guest’ queue... although this was
where the perks of being on the guest list stopped. Any illusions
I might have had about the fact that we were on the guest list might
have somehow lead to a meeting with David were quashed the minute
I saw the size of the queue!
Anyway having just got there in time we then spent what seemed like
ages but probably wasn’t in the queue waiting for them to get organised
enough to let us in. I’m just glad it wasn’t raining! Eventually
in we troop and Lauren tells me that this is the same studio they
filmed David’s interview with the legendary Michael Parkinson in
(name dropper!). Our particular guest list crowd are given seats
in the middle of the studio… which by the way looks a lot smaller
in reality than it does when you watch the show… we were more toward
the end where the main set was so we were pretty happy with that.
Soon the place had filled up and it seemed that those who had ‘ordinary’
tickets were closer to the front than we were, but I suppose that
is the payoff you get for queuing for 5 or 6 hours!
The warm up man came on, although he wasn’t so much a warm up as
a constant anchor throughout the show. He gave us all the do’s and
don’ts…do smile and jump about like lunatics…don’t have your phone
on and don’t take photos (which for me was the SINGLE biggest downside
of the whole event), he got us all up dancing and clapping before
trying that old well tested routine of pitting one side of the audience
against the other… and by the way our side were WAY better even though
we never won anything!
Finally enough with the frivolity and on with the show….
I don’t really think there is any need to bore you with what exactly
happened ... for two reasons… one after two glasses of wine on an
empty stomach I can’t remember myself ... and two because by the
time this gets posted most of you will probably have seen the show
for yourselves and KNOW what happened! So maybe what I need to do
is limit myself to what I thought and felt as the show unfolded.
I had been excited about going a couple of days ago, when Lauren
told me we were on the guest list and then strangely that had faded
as I guess the normality of working life took over but now, here
in the studio I realised that I was actually quite nervous in that
excited nervous kind of way and I just wanted the show to start so
that I could see David.
Eventually it did….Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins came on first
and got a suitably raucous reception, little did they know we were
just practicing for the main man! David was introduced the FNP ‘star’
door slid open and there he was. Talk about complete and utter BEDLAM,
the place went wild!!! Everybody and I mean everybody was on their
feet, screaming clapping, yelling, you name it we were doing it.
I think David might have got the message as to why we were all there.
I’m sure you have all seen by now what he was wearing and just how
good he looked but I also know that the television pictures and screencaps
that Lauren will post will not do him justice. Take it from me he
is so much better looking, much funnier and a good deal skinnier
in reality…in fact I had a hard job tearing my eyes off a certain
part of his anatomy (and NO I don’t mean there) to watch the show.
Hang on... even the thought of that this early in the morning (and
boy is it early) means I’ll have to go and lie down in a dark room
for a while!!
Meanwhile back at the show… it’s pretty obvious from the way that
the three of them react when they are together that they have a genuine
bond and hopefully at least some of that will come out in the show.
Whenever there was a break in filming the three of them could usually
be found at one side of the stage in a huddle giggling like little
kids with a secret.
I’m assuming that the order it was filmed in was the same as the
order it will be broadcast in as there didn’t seem to be many breaks
in filming to reset the stage.
I’m sure Lauren will put me right if I get any of this in the wrong
place but from my memory David did the opening monologue and then
went and sat behind the desk (sadly hiding that part of his anatomy
that had me so fixated earlier) to answer Alan and Justin’s questions.
There was nothing new or insightful to be learned from this, David
was very coy about giving away too much of what we can expect to
see in the new series of Doctor Who, but we were treated to a clip
from a forthcoming episode and if that was anything to go by then
I for one can’t wait!
The FNP news was immediately after the break and involved a very
ingenious change of clothes for David…television…it’s all done with
smoke and mirrors you know.
Throughout the show there were filmed inserts that had been previously
recorded and were shown to us just as you will see them in the show.
It was a difficult choice to make, deciding whether to watch the
film clips or just to watch David…so I did a bit of both…well I can
always see the film clips on the show…only those of us who were there
could watch what David was doing….which seemed on several occasions
to be getting his make up touched up and drinking lots of water.
Lauren had been approached at the end of last week to see if she
had any David Tennant memorabilia that she would be willing to lend
them for a photo shoot. Sadly as she was at home and all her stuff
wasn’t she couldn’t help out and due to technical difficulties (i.e.
a bank holiday) they declined my offer of my framed T-shirt. The
reason they wanted the stuff….was for the ‘Watch out Tennant’s about’
section of the show which featured some hapless member of the public
being set up by his boss. He handled the situation very well... much
better than I would have done… and because I know that there are
young members in our forums who frequent this site I will refrain
from telling you EXACTLY what I would have done if it had been me
who found David in that predicament, but I wouldn’t have called for
help!
Then it was time for ‘Who knows the most about the quest host’ section
of the show, which was rigged to ensure that Alan’s side of the audience
won and had the chance to grab the cash off the back of that poor
unsuspecting bloke (NOT) who got fired from The Apprentice last week.
And if that sounds like sour grapes, of course it is, we were on
Justin’s side of the audience and we were robbed. I’m not entirely
sure what Justin had done to ‘upset’ David but he did seem to be
on the end of more electric shocks than anybody else!!
After they had filmed that section and were changing the sets I noticed
David giving himself a shock to see what it was like! I think he
was surprised how strong it was although he didn’t yelp like the
others did.
‘Ask me anything’ came next and here is where I’ll ruin another
illusion for you. It isn’t a random selection from the audience at
all….GOSH….No S**T Sherlock!!!...and there you all were thinking
all you had to do was think of a question, stick up your hand
and wait to be chosen. What actually happens is the questions are
chosen by the production team and then those lucky few who either
sent the questions in or are chosen for some other non specific reason
(like they run the BEST David Tennant site on the web) are told which
question they will ask. Even being told that you are going to ask
a question doesn’t guarantee that you will get picked on the night,
so you could spend the whole show worrying about having to stand
up in front of 600 strangers, a few million viewers and of course
David Tennant and then not get picked!
I’m not sure if they will use all the questions that were asked
but the ones that I can remember – and these are not in the order
they were asked (my memory isn’t that good) included:
Which 5 people, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?
Can you explain the offside rule?
Can I ruffle your hair? (Now that is one question I wish I’d thought
of!!!!!!)
Who has the biggest….how shall I put this….let’s say ‘manhood’ David
or John Barrowman?
Who would you have as your assistant in Doctor Who, Alan or Justin?
Has David ever insisted that a girlfriend refer to him solely as
The Doctor when they are in bed together (Carefully put for our younger
readers!!)
When it came time for David to pick an audience member to play his
Big Fun Game Show despite all our best efforts to get ourselves noticed…
by more jumping up and down, screaming and clapping I have a suspicion
that this was fix as well….because who should get chosen….the girl
who had ruffled his hair…talk about a big night for her. My consolation…….I
didn’t have to worry about throwing up all over David and when he
was introducing his choice of contestant from the steps just off
to our left I did get another good long look at ‘that’ part of him
again!
And that was really pretty much it. We got to dance like madmen
to The Wombats and watch the boys film several trailers for the show,
which was one of the few times that anybody actually made a mess
of their words…take a bow Mr Tennant!
David then signed his face that had been behind the set all through
the show (and we can all watch for that on EBay…I don’t think!) and
we gave him a send off that matched his arrival…how I have any voice
left at all this morning is a wonder.
I doubt I have done the whole experience justice here but I have
tried to give a flavour of what it was like. I hope that you all
enjoy the show I for one will be interested to see if I can remember
the bits that didn’t make it to the final version…although if I am
still awake by 10.00 tonight it will be a miracle!
Finally… yes really finally this time….I have a couple of people
I need to thank, firstly, Lauren for inviting me to be her ‘plus
one’…you’re a star and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world and
also, of course, to David for doing the show, playing along and generally
looking GORGEOUS….especially that…….
