Journey's End

Writer:   Russell T Davies O.B.E
Director: Graeme Harper

“Every night Doctor when it gets dark and the stars come out I’ll look up on her behalf.  I’ll look up at the sky and think of you”

In the middle of his regeneration having used enough energy to heal himself The Doctor channels the excess energy into his hand in the jar.

Sarah Jane has been stopped on her way to rendezvous with The Tardis and looks certain to be exterminated until a flash of light brings Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler across from their parallel world and they destroy the Daleks. But as other Daleks have transported The Tardis to the Crucible, the three of them have to allow themselves to be captured and transported to the ship too.

Fearing the worst Martha is prepared to use the Osterhagen Key and teleports herself to Germany where the main UNIT base for the key is located. She makes contact with two other bases and is ready to activate the key but decides to give The Doctor a little longer.

With The Tardis on the Crucible, The Doctor and his friends have no choice but to face The Daleks. One by one they step outside but before Donna can get out the door slams shut locking her inside. The Daleks believing The Tardis is a weapon send it plunging into the flaming heart of the Crucible where it will be torn apart. Inside The Tardis Donna is scared but finds herself drawn to The Doctor’s hand in the jar and reaches out to it. The residual regeneration energy The Doctor fed back into the hand passes into Donna breaking the glass of the jar. The hand then takes the energy and transforms into an alternative version of The Doctor who manages to dematerialise The Tardis just before it is destroyed.

Jack attacks the Supreme Dalek and is killed although it is just a ploy to get himself separated from The Doctor and Rose so that he can find other ways to destroy The Daleks.  The Doctor and Rose are taken to the vault to face Davros.

On The Tardis Alt!Doctor has repaired the damage and explained to Donna how he is unique having grown partly from her. Alt!Doctor has some of Donna’s characteristics but he also only has one heart. He is part Time Lord, part Human.

Davros traps The Doctor and Rose in holding cells but The Doctor just taunts Davros telling him that he is nothing more than the pet of The Daleks. Davros admits that Dalek Caan has been behind their plans from the start.

Mickey, Sarah and Jackie are now on board the Crucible in with a group of humans who The Daleks plan to use to test their new reality bomb on. Sarah and Mickey manage to slip away but Jackie, is still trapped with the rest of the group. The Daleks use the 27 planets to form a concentrated source of energy to power the bomb but before it is tested the teleport device that Jackie and Mickey used reaches full power again and Mickey attracts Jackie’s attention and she is able to get away.

The bomb is activated and the rest of the humans are turned into dust and then into nothing! Davros intends to use the bomb on a universe wide scale to dissolve every form of matter into nothing until there is nothing but The Daleks left.

Jack has been following life signs on his vortex manipulator and finds Sarah, Mickey and Jackie. Sarah shows him a necklace she bought. It contains a warp star which can be used to create an explosion and Jack sets about wiring it into the main computer of the Crucible.

Inside The Tardis the Alt!Doctor is building a device that will use the fact that all the Daleks have the same genetic code as Davros to destroy them by turning their energy back on themselves.

Martha sends a transmission from Earth telling The Daleks to leave them alone or she will activate the Osterhagan Key.  Davros, The Doctor and Rose can also see the transmission and The Doctor asks Martha what the key is. She tells him that it is a series of nuclear warheads buried under the surface of the Earth. When they are detonated the Earth will be torn apart.
An internal transmission from Jack’s group is received. They tell Davros that they are prepared to detonate the warp star to stop The Daleks.
The Doctor is dismayed and distraught that these people whom he considers to be his friends would resort to such violent acts even with the best of intentions. Davros gloatingly tells them all to look at the true soul of The Doctor the man who abhors violence and yet uses others as weapons and murderers. He asks The Doctor how many have died and how many more will die for the sake of their beloved Doctor.

Before any of the ‘children of time’ can make good on their threats The Daleks have them all transported to the vault and force them to surrender and watch as they prepare to activate the reality bomb.  As they watch in horror The Tardis reappears and The Alt!Doctor rushes out brandishing his weapon but before he can use it he is struck down by Davros.  Donna rushes out but again before she can get to the weapon she too is struck by an energy beam and thrown back against a nearby console. The Daleks destroy the weapon. As the countdown to detonation reaches zero, Donna now recovered from being zapped and seemingly possessed of a sudden intelligence and understanding that matches The Doctor’s uses The Daleks own console to shut down the energy flow and stop the countdown. Davros orders his Daleks to kill her but using her newly emerged knowledge she easily disables them. Alt!Doctor realises that she is part Time Lord, part Human just as he is.

Donna frees them from the holding cells and whilst the ‘children of time’ keep The Daleks occupied she helps the two Doctors set about returning the 27 planets back to their correct places in time and space. Donna explains that she got the regeneration energy when The Alt!Doctor was created but it lay dormant until Davros attacked her.

The Doctor knows that somebody has been manipulating the time lines to bring them all to this time and place and Dalek Caan admits that it is him. He has seen what The Daleks have done and will do throughout time and space and decided to bring it to an end. For that he needed The Doctor and the DoctorDonna. The Supreme Dalek descends to the vault to deal with Davros who he believes has betrayed The Dalek race and  Jack takes the opportunity to destroy the Supreme Dalek but not before he has damaged the console the two Doctors were using to send the planets back. Only the Earth is still out of place but The Doctor knows that they can use The Tardis to help get it back.

Dalek Caan insists that his prophecy must be fulfilled and that The Doctor must stop The Daleks. The Alt!Doctor knows that Caan is right because even without the reality bomb The Daleks are more than capable of over running the Universe. He turns The Daleks’ own power back on them and destroys them.
Hearing the destruction The Doctor comes out of The Tardis, he can’t believe that his alternative self has destroyed the Dalek race. He orders everybody back into The Tardis and then tries to save Davros but he refuses his help and as he is consumed by the fire he is heard damning The Doctor as the Destroyer of Worlds!
Torchwood and Mr Smith open the rift and harness the energy to allow the ‘children of time’ to fly The Tardis and bring the Earth home.

With the Earth safely returned it is time for the ‘children of time’ to move on again. Sarah Jane is first to leave, returning to her son and her own adventures.
Jack and Martha go next. The Doctor tells Martha to save the world one more time by destroying the Osterhagan Key. Mickey is next as he has no reason to return to the parallel world.

The Doctor takes The Tardis back to the Bad Wolf Bay of Rose’s parallel world. Rose tells him that she didn’t spend all that time looking for him to let him go again. He tells her that she has no choice. They may have saved the earth but they also created the Alt!Doctor, who now needs Rose as much as the original once did.
Rose asks both of The Doctors about the last time they were on Bad Wolf Bay. She asks them what was the last thing he said to her and what was he going to say. The Doctor asks her if he really needs to say it but Alt!Doctor leans in and whispers something in her ear. As Rose and Alt! Doctor kiss, Donna and The Doctor slip away.

Inside The Tardis Donna is talking and acting just like The Doctor does but having The Doctor’s mind in her body was never meant to happen and will eventually kill her.
The Doctor knows what he has to do and despite Donna’s pleas not to, he takes away every memory she ever had of him and all the things that they did together. Once again she is just a temp from Chiswick with a habit of missing the bigger picture!

He takes Donna back to Wilf and Sylvia and tells them that they can never tell her anything about her life with him because any memory of him will burn up her mind and kill her. Wilf promises to look after her and to think of them both when he looks at the stars.

The Doctor returns to an empty Tardis. He may think that he is alone but ‘the children of time’ are always there for him…waiting.
